The Jammu and Kashmir police have initiated a robust investigation into the recent terror attack in Reasi that occurred on Sunday evening. This attack has prompted swift action from law enforcement to understand and address the situation.
Terrorism is a violent and illegal method used to achieve specific goals by impacting nearly every aspect of human life, including economic, political, and social spheres. Essentially, terrorism opposes the concept of freedom, making it meaningless. In India, terrorism is driven by political, ideological, and ethnic factors that threaten the country's social structure. Therefore, it is essential to control terrorist activities to allow citizens to enjoy their social, economic, and political rights.
India has experienced numerous terrorist attacks in the past. Some of the most severe attacks include the 2017 Amarnath Yatra attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the 2016 Uri Attack and the 2008 Mumbai attacks. These attacks were carried out by terrorist groups to instill fear among Indian citizens. Various forms of terrorism in India include ethno-nationalist, religious, left-wing, narco-terrorism and cross-border terrorism. The regions most affected by terrorism are Jammu and Kashmir, the northeastern states, and central India, where Maoist insurgents are active.
To combat terrorism, India has enacted several laws over time. The main anti-terrorism law currently in effect is the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967 (UAPA). This law which was enacted by Parliament in 1967, allows for reasonable restrictions on the rights to freedom of speech and expression, peaceful assembly and the formation of associations or unions to protect India's sovereignty and integrity. Initially, the Act targeted general unlawful activities but stricter provisions specifically addressing terrorism were added through various amendments starting in 2004 after the repeal of POTA.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the police have established 11 specialized teams. These teams are tasked with accurately examining all aspects of the attack, including gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and analysing any relevant information. This concentrated effort highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching the incident.
According to Rayees Mohammad Bhat, Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Udhampur range, the police have already identified some promising leads. Although it is too early to determine the exact number of terrorists involved, preliminary reports suggest that there may have been two to three attackers. The investigation teams are actively following these leads and continuously receiving new information.
The police are committed to acting on the intelligence and evidence as it becomes available. The ongoing receiving of leads and inputs will guide their future actions. This dynamic approach ensures that the investigation remains responsive and adaptable to new developments.
The formation of 11 investigative teams by the Jammu and Kashmir police highlights their dedication to resolving the Reasi terror attack case. With early leads indicating the involvement of a small group of terrorists, the police are diligently pursuing all paths to bring clarity and justice to the situation.
Officials detailed that the bus, which was traveling from the Shiv Khori shrine to Katra came under attack by terrorists at approximately 6:10 pm as it reached the Pouni area in the Reasi district near the border with Rajouri district. This deliberate attack led to the catastrophic consequences witnessed.
In response to the tragic event, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, announced financial support for the victims and their families. On Monday, he declared that an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh would be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack. Additionally, Rs 50,000 will be given to each person who was injured. This gesture is part of the government's effort to support the affected families during this difficult time.
The investigation and government support measures emphasise the ongoing efforts to address the impact of the terror attack and bring justice to the victims and their families.
