A powerful wave of online support has recently gathered momentum across India that has resulted in encouraging citizens to avoid travelling to Turkey and Azerbaijan. This movement emerged in response to the two countries’ open backing of Pakistan during the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. The call to boycott seems to be achieving it's goal as a large number of Indian travellers have already taken action.
People from various parts of India have begun cancelling their trips to Turkey and Azerbaijan. The movement is not just limited to individual actions but, major online travel booking platforms and travel agencies have also responded by suspending flight bookings to these destinations. This collective reaction reflects a strong sense of national pride and unity among Indian citizens.
The issue has also drawn attention to IndiGo Airlines, which is being criticised for continuing its partnership through a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines. Many social media users have openly questioned this alliance by urging the airline to reconsider its decision in light of Turkey’s political stance.
In response to the boycott, users on X (earlier Twitter) have come forward with alternative travel suggestions. Countries like Greece and Armenia have been recommended as equally attractive and politically neutral destinations. Several users shared stories of cancelling their own or their friends’ tickets to Turkey and Azerbaijan, proudly calling it a “patriotic move.”
One particular story from Mumbai stands out. A local family had planned a vacation to Turkey but reversed their decision after learning about Turkey’s support for Pakistan. The turning point came during a family dinner, when their 10-year-old son asked, “Why are we going to Turkey if they support our enemy?” His innocent question surprised the parents and sparked a meaningful discussion. Deeply moved by their son’s awareness, the family decided to cancel their trip and is now exploring other holiday destinations.
This growing travel boycott reflects a strong wave of patriotic feeling among Indians. It sends a clear message that national interest and solidarity can influence everyday choices, including travel plans. As more people share their stories, it becomes evident that the movement is not just about politics, it is about standing together for the nation.
In light of the recent political developments, the call to boycott travel to Azerbaijan is expected to have a major impact especially since the country has become a favourite international destination for Indian tourists in recent years. Situated along the scenic Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan has seen an impressive rise in visitors from India, but that trend now appears to be in danger.
According to the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, Indian tourist numbers reached an all-time high in 2024, with a total of 2,43,589 arrivals. This marks a remarkable 108% increase compared to the 1,17,302 Indian visitors in 2023. To put this into perspective, only 4,853 Indian tourists visited Azerbaijan back in 2014. Clearly, the past ten years have brought extraordinary growth in tourism from India. However, this upward trend could face a sharp reversal due to the recent geopolitical tensions.
The data also showed that Indian tourists are not just visiting in large numbers, instead they are also spending significantly. On average, each Indian visitor spent around 2,208 Azerbaijani Manat in 2024, which is approximately ₹1.1 lakh in Indian currency. The loss of this spending power could be a serious blow to Azerbaijan’s economy.
As patriotic sentiment rises in India following the political support shown by Turkey and Azerbaijan toward Pakistan, popular travel platforms have taken strong measures. Several major booking sites have suspended all travel-related services to these nations.
On May 9, the well-known travel portal Ixigo announced its decision to stop offering bookings to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and China. The company issued a bold statement:
"In solidarity with our nation, Ixigo is suspending flight and hotel bookings for Turkey, Azerbaijan, and China. Because when it comes to Bharat, we don't think twice. Jai Hind." This decision reflects the emotional and nationalistic stand taken by companies as well as travellers in response to global political alignments.
Another popular platform, EaseMyTrip, also stepped in a day earlier with a formal travel advisory. The message cautioned Indian citizens about visiting Turkey and Azerbaijan by stressing the need for awareness amid growing India-Pakistan tensions.
The advisory read:
"Following the Pahalgam attack and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, travellers are urged to stay aware. As Turkey and Azerbaijan have shown support for Pakistan, we strongly recommend visiting only if absolutely necessary. Stay informed. Travel responsibly."
This clear warning highlights how recent events are reshaping travel decisions and prompting many to reconsider their vacation plans based on national interest.
The political stance of countries like Turkey and Azerbaijan is having a real impact on travel patterns from India. What once seemed like a booming tourism relationship may now face a period of pause. Indian citizens and businesses are making it clear that the nation's dignity and unity take precedence over leisure and travel. As this boycott unfolds, it sends a strong and unified message that India stands together when it comes to matters of national pride.
