Women empowerment is about giving women the ability to control their lives, make their own choices and have the same access to resources and opportunities as men. It is about creating a society where women can participate equally in social and economic activities have their voices heard and have their rights protected. Women empowerment covers various areas such as education, economics, politics and social aspects. The ultimate goal is to create a world where women can live freely without facing discrimination or restrictions based on their gender.
Women’s empowerment in India is confronted with numerous challenges and obstacles that hinder their journey towards equality and full participation in society. These issues range from violence and limited education access to economic disparities and cultural barriers.
One of the most severe challenges is gender-based violence. This includes domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, and dowry-related crimes. Such violence inflicts both physical and psychological harm on women, restricting their freedom and limiting their opportunities. The pervasive threat of violence creates an environment where women cannot fully participate in society as their safety is continuously compromised.
Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, yet many girls in India face significant barriers to accessing it. Factors such as poverty, cultural norms and inadequate infrastructure lead to lower enrolment rates for girls. These barriers prevent girls from acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for economic independence and personal growth. Without education, their prospects for a better future remain limited.
Economic disparities between men and women are also a significant obstacle. Women often face discrimination in hiring practices, occupational segregation and a lack of representation in leadership roles. These factors contribute to the persistent gender pay gap where women earn less than men for the same work. This economic inequality reduces women’s independence and limits their decision-making power, continuing a cycle of disadvantage.
In the political arena, women are significantly underrepresented. This underrepresentation is evident at both national and state levels where women’s perspectives and priorities are often overlooked in policymaking processes. The lack of female voices in political decision-making means that issues important to women are not adequately addressed, delaying progress towards gender equality.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has unveiled a new program named the 'Yashaswini' initiative. Launched under the 'Empower Her Udan' campaign, this initiative aims to encourage and support women entrepreneurs throughout the country.
The first phase of the Yashaswini initiative began on Friday, July 19 in Jaipur. The event took place at the Rajasthan International Centre and saw the participation of approximately 600 women entrepreneurs from the state.
According to Ankita Pandey, the Director of MSME, the primary goal of the Yashaswini initiative is to provide formal education to women running commercial enterprises. This initiative seeks to raise awareness about the various MSME schemes available to them.
Pandey emphasized that the initiative aims to equip women entrepreneurs with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in their businesses. At the event, women had the opportunity to register at various stalls based on the skills they wished to develop. These skills include:
Pandey highlighted that the Yashaswini initiative is not limited to a single event. Instead, it includes a series of workshops organized at local MSMEs to provide ongoing support and development for women entrepreneurs. This approach ensures that the women continue to receive the guidance and resources they need to succeed in their ventures.
"This is not a one-day event; it will be a continuous process and training workshops will also be organised at local MSME organisations for further development in this matter," she said.
The initiative described is not just a single-day event. It represents an ongoing effort aimed at continuous improvement and development. The plan includes organizing regular training workshops at local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) organizations. These workshops will focus on furthering the development of this initiative by ensuring that progress is sustained over time.
The event will see the participation of several key leaders. Union Minister for MSME, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Union Minister of State for MSME, Sobha Karandlaje will be in attendance. They will be joined by the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Bhajan Lal Sharma and State Cabinet Minister Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Their presence highlights the importance of this initiative and the collaborative effort required to drive it forward. The presence of these leaders highlights the commitment at various levels of government to support and enhance the MSME sector. The ongoing nature of this initiative with its focus on continuous development through training workshops demonstrates a long-term vision for growth and improvement.
