In Gujarat’s Virparda village, the Morbi taluka stands as an ordinary farm until one incident completely changed its course. A simple farm well, approximately 18 feet deep, was noted to have strange movements. Only three months after construction, farmer Pranjivan Sadariya noticed this odd behaviour on August 2, 2026.
Well water usually stays still. However, in this case, there was continuous rippling, with the water often rising to the edges and even spilling over. Visually, this well now represented the ebb and flow of waves in an ocean, and this distinction made the phenomenon so compelling.
This wasn’t a specific, one-time occurrence; reports have described the water as being in continuous motion. As Sadariya said, “When I arrived at my farm on Sunday, water from the well was spilling over the edge, and the same thing has continued ever since.”
The incident soon attracted massive footfall from locals and people from neighbouring villages. Even motorists travelling along the national highway stopped to see it for themselves. Seeing the water’s unique behaviour in the well in Morbi taluka, several videos were widely circulated online, and this unusual movement gathered several explanations from citizens.
Some villagers wondered whether this was an indication of seismic activity, while others pondered over supernatural explanations. But one particular local belief stood out. This one was in relation to Morbi’s geographical aspects. Morbi is relatively close to the Arabian Sea, and due to this, some people connected the movement of the water with the sea’s tides.
The idea was that the underground water channels, somehow connected with the inland groundwater systems, were also in relation to coastal waters, and this combination caused the well to respond to the tidal movements. However, it is also important to note that this is a local belief. Many believe in folklore to create some sort of explanation for this unjustifiable movement of water.
However, it is important to note that water underground is generally connected through aquifers, fractures and pores. These are natural occurrences in geographical formations. Hence, groundwater does become a broader part of the water cycle because whenever rainfall occurs, water infiltrates the ground and can seep into saturated underground formations.
So, whether the Arabian Sea tides are actually causing this particular movement becomes a completely different question.
The earthquake theory was the first one ruled out by scientists. When the well water’s movement was noticed across several days, one thing was certain: there was continuous motion, and people wondered whether something was happening underground.
In a region where people were seeing unseen forces, earthquake speculation quickly became an understandable concern. But after investigation, officials stated that this was not a possibility, as district geologist J. S. Vadher stated, “This is not seismic activity.”
The officials at the Institute of Seismological Research in Gandhinagar were also consulted, and reports say that the ISR confirmed that there was no active fault in the area. Therefore, we should not think of this as an earthquake warning or as a precursor.
Vadher also provided an explanation about why this could be happening. He stated that heavy upstream rainfall would have likely recharged the groundwater while air was still trapped inside the rock pore spaces, and that air was being released slowly, disturbing the water level.
This is another possibility. A seiche essentially refers to the oscillation of water that occurs within an enclosed body. This could be imagined through the filling of a bucket with water and giving it a sudden push. The water won’t become still immediately; it will have some movement from side to side while it gradually settles.
A similar oscillating movement can also occur in water bodies under certain conditions. Some reports that covered the Morbi well incident have also referred to the possibility of a well seiche or a resonance. This is where the shape, along with the depth of the well, could amplify relatively small disturbances in the groundwater system.
However, this is not a confirmed official diagnosis. It could just be a possible scientific framework that could help people understand the movement behind this phenomenon.
A scientific team from Gandhinagar was brought in to investigate the site. Alongside that, the State Water Data Centre team also took an inspection of the well.
The team ruled out seismic activity or major geological disturbances as the cause. But they did mention that there was a likely chance that groundwater recharge and trapped air could provide the explanation.
The administration, nevertheless, said that a detailed investigation was needed to understand the final cause. Swapnil Khare, the Morbi Collector, stated that the Gujarat government had also been informed and that a Gandhinagar team would visit the village for further investigation.
Khare stated, “We have informed the Gujarat government about it, and a team from Gandhinagar will visit the site for further investigation.”
The authorities have also asked people to maintain checks and balances on whether rumours are being spread about the phenomenon. They do not want the phenomenon to look more dramatic. They want to make it easier to understand and not turn this into a social media script about unexplained events or earthquake warnings.
The authorities have said that proper investigation is required to further determine what the logical causation is behind the phenomenon.

But the investigation still needs to be completed to establish that the unusual behaviour of the well cannot simply be explained by a general statement that there was excessive rainfall.
Therefore, this story showcases how a natural phenomenon often sits at the intersection of observation, culture, fear and science, and how the involvement of both observation and innovation is crucial.
