Hospitality is the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Hospitality plays a fundamental role in augmenting or decreasing the volume of sales of an organization, hence every business should master this art.
In the West today, hospitality is rarely a matter of protection and survival and is more associated with etiquette and entertainment. However, it still involves showing respect for one's guests, providing for their needs, and treating them as equals. Cultures and subcultures vary in the extent to which one is expected to show hospitality to strangers.
The hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, food and drink service, event planning, theme parks, and transportation. It includes hotels, restaurants and bars.
Hospitality is basically a combination of Hotels and Tourism.
The direct and indirect economic contribution of the tourism industry in India which includes airlines, hotels, and others is estimated at about 10% of India's GDP.
Many students have an interest prospects in the hotel industry but the misconceptions about the job prospects in this industry did not make it a popular choice for Indian Parents.
This industry gains popularity only for Chefs, as this is the only part of an industry which is showcased by the Entertainment industry. The chef/cookery shows on Television and other mediums, highly attract students as well as parents in this part of hospitality plus the high wages paid to Chefs.
But, Hospitality is based on three more major cores, namely Food and Beverage, Front Office, and Accommodations, and all contribute equally to Hotel operations.
The Food and Beverage has vast scope in terms of job. The only known part to Indian parents is the Waiter ship, but the Hospitality graduates interested in Food and Beverage can opt for less explored jobs which are highly paid and explorative. These include Sommeliers, Tea tasters, Recipe tasters, Cheese makers, etc.
The Front office has vast scope too in terms of job prospects. The graduates can opt for jobs such as Managers in hotels, airlines, etc.
In the Indian Education system, the neglected part of Hospitality is Accommodation. Every parent will second me in the fact that Accommodation is an essential part of every travel, but nearly 05 percent of graduates opt for this core of Hospitality. The reasons being low wages, less exploration, misconceptions of parents, etc.
I, being a professional of this core, exploring this core for the last 08 years, would opt for this opportunity to hype this core to the Indian Parents. Firstly, I would explain to everyone reading this article that Accommodation is not only Cleaning and Dusting.
The Accommodations give you major prospects to work, which include following (to name a few):
Secondly, this part of the industry is now changing its paradigm from a traditional to a more adventurous state. The Covid-19 pandemic has created much-needed hype for this industry. Now, this core is becoming essential for all fields.
So, I advice every Parent reading this article that the Hospitality Industry is a combination of all these four cores. Every core has its essential role in making guests stay adventurous and creating a feeling of HOME AWAY FROM HOME.
So, please let the student decide the core irrespective of any four and please change the notion about the Accommodations.
