We live in a society where shaming is
One of the values hammered into us,
flaws are so deeply embedded that
Questioning it sounds like a cuss.
We live in a society where the ideal
Elders body shame us with a smile on face,
“Become too thin”, “are you dieting”, “you’ve
Gained weight”, it just feels like a maze.
Maze in which we know where we stand,
We know the way out but still stuck there,
As our parents jump in with the concept
Of values and respect but how is this fair?
Isn’t respect supposed to be both ways with
No exceptions to any gap,
But in reality respect has become like an
Inescapable trap.
This is the reason a child grows up with issues
thinking they themselves have some problem,
It develops into complexes, phobias and other
Mental health disorders sinking them to the bottom.
A truth I want to say today and it might
sound a bit harsh to hear,
Most of the time it’s the elder women around
us who pass such comments then cheer.
It is true that not all of them might be
Aware about it but they do cause damage,
Making comments about body, appearance in
front of all to someone who just reached teenage.
Why is this not talked about by the generation
Who acts woke towards everything,
Why is it not taken up by our parents or Maintaining
relationships are more necessary than their child’s feelings.
How are kids expected to not be rebellious, share every
detail at their home and abide by the rules,
When the real issues are always ignored in the name of
“They are elders”, “It’s just a joke”, making them feel like fools.
For once, listen to your child and understand their
Concerns without acting out,
Make them feel safe, tell them they are fine the
Way they are before it leads to self-doubt.
