The wait is finally over! After 11 years without an ICC trophy, the Indian cricket team erupted in jubilation on Saturday night as they clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 title in a thrilling encounter against South Africa. With this win, India joins West Indies and England as the only three teams to have won the Men’s T20 World Cup twice. After the heartbreak in Ahmedabad came a redemption song at the Kensington Oval in Barbados that witnessed a nail-biting final with India emerging victorious by a narrow margin of 7 runs. This triumph marks a historic moment for Indian cricket etching a new chapter in the cricketing legacy.

India was rock solid from the very start of the tournament and didn't even drop a single match. They were determined to take the trophy home this time after defeating the strong contenders Australia in the Super Eight. The final showdown started with India winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

Collective Efforts seal the deal for India

The architect of India’s victory was none other than the evergreen Virat Kohli. After a period of stuttering form, Kohli silenced his critics with a knock to be remembered for the ages. His masterful 76 runs were laced with elegance, and grit and provided the much-needed stability to the Indian innings after a shaky start. Kohli paced his innings beautifully finding boundaries at crucial junctures and stitching together a crucial partnership with Axar Patel. His innings was a testament to his experience and unwavering determination proving that he remains a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.

Axar Patel's crucial knock of 47 runs gave Kohli time not to take too many risks and stay rock solid at one end of the pitch. While Kohli’s knock was the cornerstone of India’s batting display it was a collective effort that secured victory. Rohit Sharma despite falling early provided crucial impetus. Later, Shivam Dube provided valuable support to Virat Kohli in the death overs scoring a quickfire 27.

The Indian bowling attack known for its lethal pace lived up to its reputation. Jasprit Bumrah, the wall of the Indian bowling unit took the very first wicket and gave India the exact start they needed. The young gun Arshdeep Singh assisted him and took the next wicket in his over. In the 14 over, Axar conceded 24 runs making the win almost reachable for the South African team. Hardik Pandya came in the 16th over and delivered a partnership-breaking ball leading to the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen.

The game still seemed to be in South Africa’s favor. It was said that the ‘Choker Curse’ had been transferred to India. However, not yet as Boom was still in action and with his sensational delivery he took the wicket of Jansen. The win was not yet confirmed with 2 overs left. Arshdeep bowled the next over pretty well, dropping just 4 runs.

The showdown started with 16 runs needed from six balls and the ball was in the hands of none other than Hardik Pandya. The very first ball he delivered was a wide full toss which was flogged down the ground for the most sensational catch one can imagine. That turned out to be a moment for the ages, Miller connected well but not well enough to take Surya Kumar Yadav out of the equation. Yadav pulled out a catch of the T20 World Cup history. Pandya delivered the rest of the balls well, taking another wicket of Rabada on the fifth of the over. With the last ball flogged in the air to deep midwicket by Nortje India clinched the T20 World Cup trophy. The Indian bowlers held their nerves, picking up wickets at regular intervals and ultimately denied the Proteas a fairytale ending.

There were raw emotions on the field with Pandya in tears, Kohli roaring with triumph and Rohit lying on the field. Klaasen looked utterly bereft. The dreaded tag won’t leave South Africa anytime soon. Jasprit Bumrah scattered South Africa’s poise with the match at their mercy but it’s Hardik Pandya who closed the game out with huge poise. Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the tournament and Virat Kohli was crowned Player of the Match.

A Nation Erupts in Celebration

The victory sparked a wave of euphoria across the 1.5 billion Indians. With Indian players crying on the field and South Africans in despair, the emotions on both sides were evident. Cricket fans poured into the streets, their homes resonating with the joyous chants of “WE MADE IT.” Social Media platforms were flooded with congratulatory messages and celebrations.

This victory holds immense significance for Indian cricket as it not only ended the long trophy drought but restored the faith of millions of fans in the team’s ability to perform on the biggest stage. They didn’t let the Choker Curse get transferred to them and lived the dream they missed in Ahmedabad.

End of An Era

With the victory also came the news of Captain Rohit Sharma, King Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from the T20 World Cup.
